A prayer and supplication to Apollo
for mercy from Pouchos of the village of Antaeopolites.
A great benefaction is offered to all those who are wronged or for your own glorious vindication. I, therefore, being fully aware of this, approach those who are glorious and unassailable, wishing to obtain justice, having been caught in countless damages, with no one being the cause,
from the most venerable lady Theophila, the wife of the most revered memory of Phoibammos, son of Dioskoros, Julius. For I have this matter concerning me.
I teach the most renowned philanthropy of yours,
which God and the most divine lords of the scepters have chosen to establish to govern this wretched land of Thebes,
and to alleviate the bitter injustices of those who dwell in it,
knowing well its maliciousness in all and its more just dealings, as I was a hired servant of the aforementioned Theophilus, I indeed say of the blessed cometes Phoibammos, and of the revenues from me, I make this return from the full amount every year with all gratitude.
And having taken hold of the office of the former Antaeopolites, Dios, the most illustrious chancellor, who is also the son of Theodosius Victor Julius, has come forth to me on behalf of Theophila and Dioskoros, her most illustrious son, and has demanded me at the office of Athanasius, the most extraordinary of the taxes.
And in this manner, under them again, having become a steward of Hellas, the most illustrious scrinarius has demanded me for other taxes.
And not only did the same Dioskoros and Theophila, his mother, not give me anything from these, but also they took away from me six circular horses, my own, and those of my mother; and the violently taken away preparations of the things of those letters and the nine living animals, and two pairs of oxen, and three hayracks of mine, filled with food and dry fodder, and twenty measures of grain, and a hundred and six vessels of wine, and sixty litras of oil,
and the back of my cart, one iron covering of this wheel, and the produce of three years, namely the wine of the lands from me. Therefore, I beseech you by the immortal crown and the most divine kings and our lords of the diadem, and by the care for your salvation, if you would command that I be justly avenged and that my matters and damages be restored to me by the aforementioned Theophilus and Dioskoros; I was wrongfully demanded by them and on their account and pretext I was sought by them from the aforementioned Hellas and Dios, from those who have been stewards of one another, and I am hostile to those who have used against me. And in return for this benefaction, I will give the third part to your children as a gift for their upbringing, and the remainder as I may find, for the sustenance of my old age and of my most miserable children, my slaves; that I may always raise up a prayer and supplication to God, for the preservation and salvation of your philanthropy, O lord.
