As (of years) (?) - ca. 13 - , Anaphalanthos, Hypocharopos, -ca.?-

Kratevas of Macedon, of the Automedon, a private citizen. He testifies

to Ptolemaios, to whom Nikadas is appointed. Of the year,

in the month of Peritios, the thirtieth, being present in the village of

Heracleopolis of the nome, I have written a testimony with others

regarding the writing of the agreement which Nikadas wrote,

of which I testify to Ptolemaios, by which he acknowledges

to have in his possession one hundred and fifty artabas of grain,

which he has presented in the second and twentieth year.

And when the aforementioned writing was sealed by both Nikadas

and Ptolemaios and me and the other witnesses, I received the

writing of the agreement to keep it safe, which I still have in my

possession. This is a copy of the writing:

In the reign of Ptolemaios, son of Ptolemaios and Arsinoe,

of the gods Philopators, in the first and twentieth year,

at the hands of the priest Ptolemaios, son of Ptolemaios,

son of Chrysermos of Alexander, and of the gods of the

Brothers and of the Benefactor gods and of the Philopator gods

and of the gods Epiphanes, of the athlete Berenike, daughter of

Euergetis, of Tryphaina of the Nymph, of the carrier of

Arsinoe Philadelphus, of Demetria of Philinus, priestess of

Arsinoe Philopator, of Eirene of Ptolemaios, in the month of

Peritios, the thirtieth, in the village of Heracleopolis of the

nome. Nikadas of Macedon, of the Automedon, testifies

to have in possession one hundred and fifty artabas of grain,

which he has presented in the second and twentieth year.

If Nikadas or another comes to Ptolemaios or those who are

with Ptolemaios, calling upon or pledging the one hundred and

fifty artabas of grain, concerning which it is written,

of the presentation which he has from Ptolemaios, let the

entry to the one who is traveling be void and let it be

additionally paid to Nikadas, to Ptolemaios, an honorable

bronze talent and the damage and the act be to Ptolemaios

according to the diagram, and let it be also valid for

another acting on behalf of Ptolemaios, doing the same and

let nothing less than this writing of the presentation be valid.

Witnesses: Kratevas, (?), Kassandros, Asclepiades, the four

private citizens, Kassandros the ilarch, the six Macedonians of

the Automedon. Nikadas has priority in the presentation to me

as it is written and I have given it to Kratevas.

English Translation

Krateuas, Macedonian, son of Automedon, private citizen, testifies for Ptolemaios, against whom Nikadas is making a claim. In the 21st year, on the 30th of the month Peritios, being present in the village Ne... of the Herakleopolite nome, I was registered as a witness along with others to a written agreement which Nikadas drew up, against whom I testify for Ptolemaios, to whom I testify, by which he acknowledged owing one hundred and fifty artabas of wheat, the entire amount due to him in the 22nd year. After the aforementioned agreement was sealed by Nikadas, Ptolemaios, myself, and the other witnesses, I received the written agreement of acknowledgment to keep it valid, which I still hold valid. The copy of the agreement is as follows:

In the reign of Ptolemaios, son of Ptolemaios and Arsinoe, the gods Philopatores, in the 21st year, under the priesthood of Ptolemaios, son of Ptolemaios, son of Chrysermos Alexandros, and of the gods Adelphoi, Euergetai, Philopatores, and Epiphaneis, when Berenike Euergetis Tryphaina, daughter of Nymphion, was athlophoros, Demetria daughter of Philinos was kanephoros of Arsinoe Philadelphos, and Eirene daughter of Ptolemaios was priestess of Arsinoe Philopator, on the 30th of the month Peritios, in the village Ne... of the Herakleopolite nome. Nikadas, Macedonian, son of Automedon, acknowledges owing to Ptolemaios, Macedonian, son of Automedon, private citizen, one hundred and fifty artabas of wheat, the amount due to him in the 22nd year...

If Nikadas or anyone else on behalf of Nikadas should proceed against Ptolemaios or those associated with Ptolemaios, making claims or seizing pledges concerning the aforementioned one hundred and fifty artabas of wheat, the amount due from Ptolemaios, let such action be invalid, and let Nikadas pay to Ptolemaios a penalty of ten talents of bronze and damages, and let the right of execution belong to Ptolemaios according to the decree. Let anyone else acting on behalf of Ptolemaios have the same rights, and let this written agreement concerning the debt remain valid. Witnesses: Krateuas, Kassandros, Asklepiades, the four private citizens, Kassandros the ilarch, the six Macedonians sons of Automedon. I, Nikadas, acknowledge the debt due to me as previously written and have given the valid document to Krateuas.
