To the recipients of this letter, to the common generals and decaprotis of the Heptanomia and Arsinoite, from Ulpius Aurelius, the most powerful governor, regarding the work of the lands and the cleansing of the canals, a copy of the letter is sent to you, dear ones, so that you may know and follow the instructions given. In the year of our Lord Marcus Aurelius Probus Augustus, to the generals and decaprotis of the Heptanomia and Arsinoite, greetings. Concerning the work of the lands and the cleansing of the canals, I have deemed it necessary to instruct you through these letters that all the farmers should already be working on these matters with all eagerness for their benefit, both for the public and for each individual. For I am convinced that all should know the benefit arising from these works. Therefore, through your concern, let the generals and decaprotis be urged to all take part in this most necessary work, and let those accustomed to this be elected to oversee the work, compelling each to fulfill the necessary tasks assigned to them without any resentment or favor, so that they may be able to withstand the forthcoming flood of the sacred Nile, and to cleanse the canals up to the so-called known points and the usual distance, so that they may easily receive the incoming waters for the irrigation of the lands, this being of common benefit, and let no one act contrary to the works for the sake of money. For if anyone dares to attempt such a thing or neglects the assigned tasks, let him know that he will be harming the entire salvation of Egypt, not only concerning money but also concerning the soul itself. Ulpius Aurelius to the strategoi and decaprotoi of Heptanomia and Arsinoite, greetings. Since the time has come for the completion of embankments and the clearing of canals, I considered it necessary to instruct you through this letter that all farmers must now diligently undertake these tasks, as it is beneficial both publicly and privately for each individual. I am convinced that everyone recognizes the benefit derived from these works. Therefore, it is your responsibility, strategoi and decaprotoi, to urge everyone to undertake this essential work, and to appoint from among the magistrates or private citizens those who customarily supervise such tasks, compelling each person to fulfill their assigned duties physically, according to the established regulation, without favoritism or hostility. Thus, the embankments will reach the prescribed height and width, and the breaches will be closed, enabling them to withstand the forthcoming blessed flood of the most sacred Nile. The canals must be cleared up to the so-called "gnomones" and the usual distance, so that they may easily receive the incoming waters for irrigation of the lands, as this is beneficial to all. No one is to collect money instead of performing these tasks. If anyone dares to attempt this or neglects the orders, let him know that he will be treated as one who harms those who have undertaken the struggle for the safety of all Egypt, a struggle concerning not only money but life itself.
