To Gaius Minicius Italus, the lord governor, from Apion son of Apion, wine merchant from the city of Oxyrhynchus. In the second year of Trajan Caesar the lord, Pasion, partner of Sarapion and creditor, having died in Alexandria and having disinherited his children due to condemnation, had as heir his wife Berenice. She, having the cargo of wine in her possession under the key of sale, has appropriated the entire price, having learned of her husband's death abroad. She is being harassed by the wicked sons, who deny the truth of what he entrusted, neither coming to an agreement nor releasing what she held as a deposit, nor handing over the documents, but continually deceiving me every day. We went to Dion the strategos, and she said: "There are written documents for three thousand and others concerning wine for five thousand." Seeing her lying, he requested the account-book of her deceased husband Pasion, which he himself had often presented, containing all written and unwritten accounts amounting altogether to five thousand two hundred forty-nine drachmas and four obols. Having been instructed not to produce it because of the examination, she concealed it, deceiving the strategos by some trickery. For these reasons, being wronged, I appeal to you, requesting, if it seems good, that you order an inspection for us, examining the loss, and that she be compelled to render an account of what she has handled, returning the deposit she holds from me and the documents, so that I may be assisted by your benefaction.
(In the fifth year of Emperor Caesar Nerva Trajan Augustus Germanicus.)
