My household servant, whose name is Peina, I loved and cared for as a daughter, hoping that, having reached the age, I would have a shepherd in my old age, a woman who is helpless and alone. This, while passing through the city on the 19th of the month, for the purpose of learning about singing and other things, she was being educated by a certain freedwoman of Longinus, who, at the hour of her departure from my house, brought Peina, who was bound by the right hand, and when I inquired from her the reason, she reported to me that she had been struck by a certain child of Polydeuces who was following her, so that from this her whole hand was crushed and most of her parts were mangled, while the others were intact. And then, not having the one who was in charge of the general, I did not separate a remedy concerning this, thinking that the wound was superficial, but being incurable and not bearing the pain concerning the servant, while she was in danger of living, I was overwhelmed with the distress of living, which from the evident things and you, being observed, necessarily fled to you, the helper, I beseech to help and to obtain from you.
