To Dion, the strategos of Arsinoite Heracleides, from the village of Philadelphia. It was sent to us under the public silver, so that we might construct a public garment, and we, who were from the work, were few men who had come to the point of being able to fulfill the command. And since four were also given from these for a covering, and they took them away from us for the need and went to Alexandria, and we became even fewer, we were forced to flee to you, and we ask, if it seems good to you, to allow us who are still remaining from the craft to be separated from other needs, so that we may complete and deliver the assigned garment, especially since we have another public garment due to us, which we need to complete again, so that we may be charitable. We were then the number of men 12, from whom the rest were taken away, so that we may be eight men remaining. from the public treasury a sum of money in advance,
so that we might produce public clothing.
We were eager and willing, but we, the men assigned to this task,
have dwindled to a small number, barely sufficient
to complete the assigned task.
Moreover, four of these men were reassigned
to equip a ship, and these too were taken from us
due to necessity and went to Alexandria. Thus,
we became even fewer in number. Therefore, we have
necessarily turned to you and request,
if it seems good to you, that we who remain
be allowed to remain undistracted by other duties,
so that we may complete and deliver the clothing
already ordered, especially since another public
clothing order is imminent, which we will again
be required to complete, so that we may be treated kindly.
We were originally twelve men, of whom four were
taken away, leaving us eight men remaining.
