English Translation

"[Aurelia Mathaathes, citizen of Marcopolis, with her brother Aurelius Koza present and signing on her behalf,] bought her own slave, a home-born named Apsalman, whose mother is Mathseine, about thirteen years old (a little more or less), medium complexion, [straight-nosed, slightly joined eyebrows,] pierced ears, goat-eyed, [healthy and without blemish. Aurelia Mathaathes, daughter of Gomaïmos, citizen of Marcopolis,] bought the aforementioned slave by purchase and sale for the price of six hundred silver denarii, and having received the price, the seller delivered the said slave to her to possess, acquire, sell, manage, and use in whatever manner she wishes. And the seller undertakes that if anyone claims ownership of the said slave or any part of him, she will stand by and defend the buyer, clear the title, and release her from the claimant. If not, she will repay the price she received and likewise compensate for any loss. Furthermore, if the said slave is afflicted by the sacred disease (epilepsy) within the next six months, the seller will take him back, returning the price she received. The buyer asked in good faith that these terms be properly executed and observed, and the seller agreed in good faith, in the presence of her brother Koza. Two copies of this contract were made, one of which will be registered in the local public archives.
